Did you know our brain deletes, distorts and generalizes incoming information using Filters to avoid Information-Overload from frying our mind?
If you want to get Attention from one (1) three-pound coconut or an audience of
them, you must overcome CLUTTER by the media and emails. It has a name:
Surprising Broca.
Too Much or Too Little
Most of us err on the side of offering way too much detail. That's you and me,
TV, print advertising, and the Internet. You know what you do when there is too
much clutter in your life – hit the Delete button, distort what we hear and see,
and generalize that they-are-all-the-same anyway.
I have CNBC on all day spitting the latest financial news at me. Our brain revels
in the stimulus of new information, but funny thing, facts are NOT knowledge
leading to expertise. Problem: we take in tons of information, but our poor Jello
brain cannot process 10% of that clutter input.
What we got is an Illusion of Discovery. I don't know the difference between Illusions and Delusions anymore than I comprehend "too much, too little
and just enough" detail. I'll ask Goldilocks and the Three-Bears.
Google: Dr. J. Grahn, 6.20.2010 appearing in the Journal, Nature.
Less is More
This is brain science. Testing 11,430 folks with six-weeks of cognitive (mind) exercises, scientists know that training does NOT work if you want to improve intelligence. It is N.G. for brain improvement and has no carry over for thinking and learning. Just the facts, folks.
But wait, there is more. Those folks who are lifelong learners, who continue to read books, articles and reports as a hobby – not because their teachers whipped them –
developed Cognitive Reserve which reduced the risk of Alzheimer and other
forms of dementia – up to 50%. Ah Hah.
Lifelong learning has another benefit. You gain longevity compared to the
other 3-pound coconuts. Continuous Learning appears to help you live longer and healthier. It is based on experience, not just genetics.
Get this. Homo sapiens accept without question information we personally discover.
So what? When we go on a Treasure Hunt (Hide-And-Seek) for Information, we
triple the value of those facts. Why? Who are you doing to believe if not your own
research.
But 50% of what we discover is not proof, just evidence. Example: half the scientists believe learning and memory training produces new Dopamine Receptors,
the other 50% think they're nuts.
Secret: go long-term investing vs. short term trading because Attention is fundamentally SELECTIVE, and our brain can only process 10% of what we get.

Surprise Broca's or Shut Up
Fear of failure causes us to say and do things in the same old, same old way. Even your significant other won't tell you that you are a Replica and Clone of yourself.
You are telling the same stories, holding the same opinions and have not changed
in ten years. And where has it gotten you?
Secret to Success
We are brow-beaten with the same commercials 24/7 and even dream of eating the
bargain Papa John pizza and drinking Coke. Does it work? Sure or the advertisers
would not be spending billions annually.
Does it change your mind? Contrarians mentally delete repetitious commercials and
make it a point to intentionally not purchase what they pitch. We can be reached
only by being unique and interesting, and to do that they must Shock and Surprise
Broca's Area of our brain.
When
Back in 1871 a French surgeon, Paul Broca, discovered a structure in the brain
that controls speech production, syntax, language comprehension and facial
neurons. Broca's Area is linked to Wernicke's Area for speech and comprehension.
In 1874 Carl Wernicke, German Neurologist discovered a structure of the brain
linked to written and spoken language and named for him. When we bore Broca -
to death, Wernicke joins the funeral and ignores the message.
Lucky or What
Which do we remember more – success or failure? Answer: we learn and remember
from Success. A lucky win is retained by our brain better than a probable loss.
For brilliant stars: Our Dopaminergic brain system helps produce learning and memory. It kicks in when something unexpected occurs, not when things are
predictable. How come? A surprise is a Reward, and our brain works for rewards.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in rewards and the anticipation of
reward. Surprising Broca is like winning a Prize. We pay attention.
For geniuses: remember the latest brain research: the Hippocampus (memory formation) and Nucleus Accumbens (rewards and novel information) work together
when there are unexpected outcomes. So what? Humans ignore the common place and pay attention to the extraordinary.

Listen to this note: "I was here and you aint, now you is there and I isn't."
Your brain has marked this silly one-liner for long-term memory. Why? It has
surprised Broca with lousy grammar and grandpa too.
